Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect from counselling?

Counselling can help you to understand yourself and your situation better. I will work with you to identify and address the issues that you want to work on. Through the therapeutic relationship with me your counsellor you can expect to-:

Gain insight into the issues in your life; explore options for change; develop your own choices and solutions; develop coping strategies to help you deal with future difficulties; discover ways to empower yourself and get you to where you want to be.

How can counselling help me?

Counselling can help you to gain a greater understanding of yourself and to explore thoughts, feelings and patterns of behaviours you are not happy with. As your counsellor I work alongside you by assisting to raise your self awareness and understanding. This often involves helping you to link past experiences to present feelings, thoughts and behaviours. Greater understanding of your history can help you to develop a stronger sense of yourself and enable you to change and create a more positive and fulfilling future.

How many sessions will I need?

Some issues can be resolved in a short time and dealt with in time limited therapy, usually up to 6 sessions. More complex or deeper-seated issues or difficulties which need to be worked on at greater depth may require an open-ended contract which will be reviewed together at regular intervals of about 6 weeks.

I will endeavour to offer you an appointment within 48 hours. I offer daytime, evening and weekend appointments.

How long does each appointment last?

Each appointment is 50 minutes long in accordance with BACP guidelines. We will usually meet weekly and continue with the sessions for as long as you and I both feel it is useful.

What will happen at the initial session?

The initial appointment is to decide whether we can work together. My aim at this stage is to talk through your goals with you and gain some clarity and understanding regarding your reasons for coming to therapy. I also need to assess if I am best suited to help you.

How do I make an appointment?

For an initial appointment to see whether counselling is right for you, you can self-refer and arrange an appointment by phone, text, email or post. I also accept GP referrals.

What will it cost?

Standard fee for individuals is £60, Low Cost fee for individuals is £35-£40 depending on personal circumstances or income (please note I offer limited low cost counselling places).

Payments are made at the end of each appointment and you can pay by cash or cheque. Please note there is a cancellation policy in place and 48 hours notice must be given or a full fee will apply.

Will anyone know I have been for counselling?

Counselling is about providing you with time and space to explore issues in a safe, supportive and confidential environment. The service I provide is confidential and I will not pass on any personally identifying factors or information to anyone, unless in extremely rare circumstances where someone’s safety is deemed to be seriously at risk and then I would seek to gain your consent to do so.
