Clinical Hypnosis

Clinical Hypnosis
I offer clinical hypnosis, sometimes referred to as hypnotherapy, as an adjunct to therapy. Hypnosis is a complimentary therapy, which utilises an altered state of awareness or consciousness. Clinical hypnosis is a therapeutic procedure during which a practitioner facilitates change in a client’s sensations, perceptions, thoughts or behaviours and is generally established by an induction, which includes suggestions for relaxation, calmness and well-being. People respond to hypnosis in different ways and regardless of how and to what degree they respond, most describe their experience as a normal state of focused attention, in which they feel calm and relaxed.

Some people may have misconceptions around hypnosis, but contrary to these ideas people who have been hypnotised do not lose control over their behaviour and remain aware of who they are and where they are. Hypnosis may be ineffective if you don’t want to be hypnotised.

Hypnosis is widely promoted as a treatment for various long-term conditions. It is also used in the treatment of pain, depression, anxiety, stress, phobias, habit disorders and many other psychological and medical problems such as pregnancy or cancer care.

However, hypnosis may not be useful for all psychological difficulties. Hypnosis should not be used if there is a history of psychosis or certain types of personality disorders. Before the decision to use hypnosis can be decided a consultation will need to be completed.

Hypnosis should only be facilitated by trained and registered individuals, preferably someone with a counselling or healthcare background, committed to an ethical framework.

Specific disorders for hypnosis as an intervention:
